The structure of the tumbler and its principle

structure

The tumbler is a hollow shell and is very light in weight; the lower body is a solid hemisphere with a large weight, and the center of gravity of the tumbler is within the hemisphere. There is a contact point between the lower hemisphere and the support surface, and when the hemisphere rolls on the support surface, the position of the contact point changes. A tumbler always stands on the support surface with one point of contact, it is always a monopod.

principle

Objects that are light on the top and heavy on the bottom are more stable, that is to say, the lower the center of gravity, the more stable it is. When the tumbler is balanced in an erect state, the distance between the center of gravity and the contact point is the smallest, that is, the center of gravity is the lowest. The center of gravity is always raised after a deviation from the equilibrium position. Therefore, the equilibrium of this state is a stable equilibrium. Therefore, no matter how the tumbler swings, it will not fall.

Because of the shape of the cone and the shape of the orbits on both sides, its center of gravity is going down, but it looks like it is going up and rolling up doesn’t match the reality of life. But it is just an illusion. Seeing its essence, the center of gravity is still lowered, so the lower the center of gravity, the more stable it is.
