The history of the glass

The earliest glass makers in the world were ancient Egyptians. The appearance and use of glass has a history of more than 4,000 years in human life. Small glass beads have been unearthed in the ruins of Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt 4,000 years ago. [3-4]

In the 12th century AD, commercial glass appeared and began to become an industrial material. In the 18th century, in order to meet the needs of making telescopes, optical glass was made. In 1874, Belgium first produced flat glass. In 1906, the United States produced a flat glass lead-up machine. Since then, with the industrialization and large-scale production of glass, glass of various uses and various properties have come out one after another. In modern times, glass has become an important material in daily life, production, and science and technology.

More than 3,000 years ago, a European Phoenician merchant ship, loaded with crystal mineral “natural soda”, sailed on the Belus River on the Mediterranean coast. The merchant ship ran aground due to the ebb of the sea, so the crew boarded the beach one after another. Some crew members also brought a cauldron, brought in firewood, and used a few pieces of “natural soda” as a support for the cauldron to cook on the beach.

The crew finished their meal and the tide started to rise. When they were about to pack up and board the ship to continue sailing, someone suddenly shouted: “Look, everyone, there is something bright and gleaming on the sand under the pot!”

The crew brought these shimmering things to the ship to study them carefully. They found that there was some quartz sand and melted natural soda stuck to these shiny things. It turns out that these shining things are the natural soda that they used to make pot holders when they cook. Under the action of the flame, they chemically react with the quartz sand on the beach. This is the earliest glass. Later, the Phoenicians combined quartz sand and natural soda, and then melted them in a special furnace to make glass balls, which made the Phoenicians a fortune.

Around the 4th century, the ancient Romans began to apply glass to doors and windows. By 1291, Italian glass manufacturing technology had been very developed.

In this way, Italian glass artisans were sent to produce glass on an isolated island, and they were not allowed to leave this island during their lives.

In 1688, a man named Naf invented the process of making large blocks of glass. Since then, glass has become an ordinary object.
